Red Deer

Cervus elaphus

If the elk is the king of the forest, the red deer is its crown prince.

Characteristics

The Adult deer has a height of 120-150 cm. Large Stags can weigh up to
250 kg while Hinds gets around 130 kg (live weight). The summer fur is short and reddish brown while the winter fur is longer and more dark
greyish-brown.

During the rut, they give themselves known by roaring loudly. The calf is reddish-brown with white spots until about two months of age.
Deer antlers are shed from late February to early March. The size of the antlers grows bigger for each year.  Tags develop until 6 years of age, then the antlers becomes more coarser. In Sweden we rarely see deers with larger antlers than a total of 14 branches.
