Elk/Moose

Alces alces

The Elk is the biggest animal in the forest of Sweden. The big ears, large nose and the beard together with the hump makes it easy to distinguish in comparison with other animals.

Characteristics

The fur can be anything from dark brown and almost black to light brown or gray. The legs are always pale greyish-white regardless of the color of the fur. The calves have a completely different color than adults during the summer, when their fur is reddish-brown. The Moose weighs 200-550 kg, and can measure up to 2m in height. The bulls are on average 20% larger than cows and is both taller and heavier with thicker necks and larger beard.
