The Beaver

Castor fiber

The beaver is well adapted for a life in water. The fur is very dense to insulate against moisture and cold. When the Beaver is swimming it uses the feet for speed and the tail for control.

Characteristics

The fur of the Beaver is Brown with lighter underparts. The tail is hairless and flat. The snout gives the Beaver an angular profile and below it there are large front teeth. A beaver who discovers or suspects a threat makes use of a powerful blow with its tail against the water surface as a warning signal.

When the Beaver dives it closes both its ear and nasal openings. It may be under the surface up to 15 minutes. If the beaver is beneath the surface a membrane cover its eyes, with a feature similar to a cyklops. A flap of skin in the throat makes it even possible for the beaver to rankle with its front teeth under water.
