Halle & Hunneberg

The tableland mountains Halle-and Hunneberg are strategically located at the southern tip of Lake Vänern. They are one of the most frequently visited places in the province of Västergötland. With a thick layer of diabase, dramatic precipices, and vertical stone pillars, they stick out in the flat landscape.

Unique features

The mountains with their unique features have for a long time been the interest of many and still, to this day, they awaken a curiosity for the landscape and the cultural history. The flora and fauna of the mountains is quite unique, not only for Västergötland, but for all of Sweden.

Royal hunt

Nevertheless, the mountains are primarily known for their large population of elk – Älgens Berg (Elk Hill). The elk hunt on the mountains of Halle- and Hunneberg has been in royal possession since 1351. Yet, the traditional royal hunt was not begun until 1885 by Oscar II. To this day, the mountains are hosts to the royal elk hunt.
